Monochrome Gallery is a great WordPress theme based off of a premium theme at Graph Paper Press.
At first glance, this theme appears to be a premium theme, but is actually free. While there may not be many back-end abilities allowing font color customization, advertisement management, and such, the theme allows you to use WordPress as a showcase of your photography and writing talents.
Installation: Installation follows standard procedure – download, unzip, upload, then activate the theme from the theme admin panel.
To change the default categories shown in the slideshow, you must go into the Options > Reading area, open up index.php, and look for/change these lines to specify the categories you want displayed on the main page. Further instructions are provided on the release page.
Custom Fields can be used to manage post and thumbnail photos. You will need to use 128×128 pixel thumbnail images and 575 pixel (width) for medium thumbnails.
As you can see, some editing of the theme is involved, but instructions have been provided on the release page and likely through a readme file, making the process fairly simple to follow.
