Extended Theme Description:

The Agregado Theme, designed by Darren Hoyt and Matt Dawson, is a free theme that is brought to you in part by Smashing Magazine.  It is a free release, but has characteristics of many of the premium themes currently available.

While the theme is focused on personal use, it can be converted to nearly any type of site while still focusing on elements that set it apart from nearly every other theme.  For one, there is a built-in lifestream module, and contact form with custom control panel (you’d normally pay $50+ for this alone!).

Many of the elements of the theme are focused on the popularity of services by the likes of Twitter, FriendFeed, and Tumblr, and the “lack of personal websites/blogs.”  Using this theme brings your lifestream carousel along with standard blog posts, transforming everything into an incredibly well-designed blog.

More than 1,000 downloads in the first day of release!

Installation/Initial Setup: The theme is rather easy to setup and configure when you first install the theme – everything is found within the control panel, resulting in little code that needs to be edited.

Note: A PSD file can also be downloaded for the theme for additional customization.

Requirements: WordPress 2.6 and higher; Firefox 3.0+, Safari 3.0+, Internet Explorer 7+; Host server with PHP5+ installed

License: You are able to use the theme for all projects, but you may not sell or redistribute the theme without all parties’ permissions – Smashing Magazine’s and the designers’.

Updates:
Version 1.0 (September 08, 2008): First release.
Version 1.1 (September 09, 2008): Permissions have been set automatically for all scripts and folders; tags/categories bar at the bottom of posts should wrap correctly; jQuery calls within header.php now point to WordPress’s native jQuery installation, preventing conflicts with Lightbox, etc. plugins; sub-page menus are now consistent;  archive links fixed.
Version 1.2 (September 10, 2008):  Bug fixed for Last.fm/audioscrobbler feeds; Flickr image sizes changed; titling of Flickr images changed; icon fixed with feed items.

Additional updates will be provided on the theme’s release page as they become available/necessary.

Additional Features:

  • Lifestream module with carousel for placing Delicious, FaceBook, Pownce, Twitter, and other recent postings from your social networking locations; newer items are lighter with a larger font size, becoming smaller and darker as they become older.
  • Custom archives page, which displays all posts in a grid format rather than a “blind” link – no more ‘September 2008′ – they are also displayed chronologically, and categorized by month and year.
  • Elements are tucked away so readers don’t have to try finding what they are looking for – subcategories, pages, monthly archives, and search.
  • Plugins, including “SimpleLife” are coded directly into the functions.php file, making it easier to upload and manage your theme/site.
  • Animated JavaScript drop-down menus.
  • Built-in contact form module with AJAX sent/failed message.
  • Built-in drop caps for lead paragraphs.
  • Numerical pagination on archive and search pages.
  • Author highlighting within comments.
  • User-profile module.
  • Widgetized bottom bar on homepage.
  • Widgetized sidebar on single post pages.
  • Print stylesheet.
  • ‘More in this Category” sidebar module.
  • Control panel options on back-end for lifestream and contact form.
